Why Learn German?
Posted on

Why Learn German? It's a question you may be asked. For those of us with a love of German language and culture, it's an easy question to answer. But others may wonder what language they should study or why German is so relevant to their lives or their future. They may be looking for the kind of answers we can all provide. With this in mind, we are launching a contest entitled "Why Learn German?" We are looking for any answers you and your students may come up with, sent to us in any form you like -- notes, videos, collages, essays, photos, musical presentations -- whatever fits your message and your mood. Visit www.concordialanguagevillages.org for contest details on how to enter.

German sounds always funny when american people speak it
But I’m proud of my language, and that other people want to learn it. It’s a beautiful language, and a beautiful land (well, of course not the politic…).

The Germans as largest American ancestral group is a myth. There is a huge undercount of British ancestry (English, Scottish, & Scots-Irish). British surnames dominate the U.S. census rolls. Otherwise, this video is great. I appreciate it as a German language learner, a fan of Germany, and German culture.

I’ve missread the thing with hate, sorry bout that. And there are indeed many things people of german speaking countries have in common, i don’t doubt that. Anyway especially in germany there are many many different cultures and sublanguages like here in Austria. Viennese people and northern german people for example have no tradition alike and can’t be compared in that way.

@Yaayzy i never said you hate Germans,i am saying your media,school text books ,newspaper e.t.c all teach you to hate each other , but you are the same .language is not the only thing that is in common between you all but also your culture , cuisine ,you look like each other, you have same traditions. and the traits of germans (like scientific mindedness and perfectionism) can be found in all german speaking europe(i know we cant generalize 100% but can say perfectionists are more common there.)

@marcuspolo202
Who said I hate germans?? Neither do I love them, simnply because i don’t know all germans and stereotypes are bullshit.
Austria and Germany (and Swizerland) are NOT the same, tough. We just speak the same language.
The USA also aren’t british because they speak english, they have developed their own culture, like germany after their unification.

1, Salzburg was an archdiocese in the Roman empire.
2, austria was also part of the holy roman empire (which was bigger than the germany we know today) but I would not call it “part of germany” either
btw the fact that the area of his birthplace was part of the HRE has nothing to do with the topographic situation nowadays. it’s true germany is NOW located where a great part of the HRE used to be but salzburg is not part of that.
Mozart was 100% “native of Salzburg”

@Yaayzy Austrians ARE Germans muck like north Korea and south Korea are one. greedy polititians and elite class have taught you to hate each other(for their own personal gains) but the fact is not only you are same people but you have stood for each other in times of need . p.s i am a Pakistani so i am not biased in any ways i love all germans(including austrians,swiss people of Luxembourg and liethstien(sp?)) for the things they have done for science and technology and also for arts and music.

@Yaayzy
Mozarts entire family was German and Mozart also considered himself a German. Mozarts birthplace, Salzburg, was part of the holy Roman empire which was area of what is Germany today.
Mozart was 100% German.
Haydn and Schubert were Austrians.
January 23rd, 2012 - 19:45
Many of the important people in history that were attributed to germany were austrians in fact! Mozart, Haydn and Schubert for example!
